10 Must-Read LGBTQ+ Nonfiction Books for Pride

Celebrate PRIDE with LGBTQIA Nonfiction Books

As an LGBTQIA+ owned business, Pride Month holds deep meaning for us—it’s not just a celebration, but a powerful reminder of where we’ve come from, who we are, and the stories that have shaped us. Books have always been a sanctuary for our community, a place to find connection, understanding, and representation when the world felt distant or unkind. That’s why we’re passionate about spotlighting LGBTQIA+ books that reflect the full spectrum of our identities and experiences.

This Pride Month, we’re sharing some of our favorite queer reads – nonfiction books that have moved us, challenged us, and reminded us that there’s power in being seen. Whether you’re part of the community or a proud ally, we invite you to celebrate with us through the joy of queer literature. These stories matter. Our stories matter. And we’re so proud to share them with you.

Transgender History by Susan Stryker

This one’s a must-have for your queer library. Susan Stryker takes us on a journey through the highs, lows, and breakthroughs of transgender history in the U.S. from the 1800s to the present. You’ll read about everything from riots to rights, and she makes it all super accessible, never boring. If you’ve ever wanted to know how we got here (and what we’re still fighting for), this book is your roadmap.

We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib

In this poignant memoir, Samra Habib recounts their journey from a childhood in Pakistan. Growing up queer and Muslim in Pakistan, moving to Canada, navigating arranged marriage, and figuring out where they fit – it’s a memoir that hits hard in all the best ways. It’s about identity, belonging, and carving space for yourself when the world doesn’t offer one. You’ll be rooting for Samra every step of the way.

Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story by Jacob Tobia

This book is a total vibe. Jacob Tobia brings humor, honesty, and a whole lot of sass to their coming-of-gender memoir. They take us through their Southern upbringing, church life, and the awkward beauty of discovering their nonbinary identity. It’s loud, proud, and will make you laugh out loud while still punching you in the feels.

Redefining Realness by Janet Mock

Janet Mock’s Redefining Realness doesn’t hold back, and we’re here for it. Her memoir is a fierce, unflinching look at growing up trans and multiracial, dealing with family, poverty, and society’s nonsense, and still managing to thrive. She tells her story with so much heart, strength, and wisdom, you’ll finish this book feeling like you just made a new friend—and a powerful one at that.

Black on Both Sides by C. Riley Snorton

This one dives deep into how Blackness and transness are connected and shaped by history. It’s insightful, bold, and flips the script on what we think we know about trans identity. Snorton brings in stories that have been left out of the mainstream narrative and reminds us just how intertwined race and gender really are. Eye-opening in the best way.

Rage: On Being Queer, Black, Brilliant… and Completely Over It by Lester Fabian Brathwaite

You know when someone says what you’re thinking but funnier, smarter, and angrier? That’s Lester. This essay collection is sharp, funny, and perfectly fed up with all the BS. It’s about being Black and queer in America, trying to chase dreams while dodging discrimination—and doing it all with biting wit and style. Rage? Yes. Sass? Also yes.

American Teenager by Nico Lang

This book will make you cry and cheer, probably at the same time. Nico Lang shares the real-life stories of eight trans and nonbinary teens navigating a world that often makes things harder than it should. But what stands out isn’t just the struggle—it’s the joy, the resistance, and the way these kids are building their own future. Seriously inspiring.

Love Expanded by Wren Burke

Think love stories only come in one flavor? Think again. Wren Burke beautifully breaks down how asexual and aromantic folks experience love, life, and connection. It’s warm, thoughtful, and eye-opening—especially if you’re used to the rom-com version of what love “should” look like. Spoiler: there’s a lot more to it, and it’s just as powerful.

It Ain’t Over Til the Bisexual Speaks edited by Lois Shearing & Vaneet Mehta

Finally, a book that gives bisexual folks the mic and the spotlight. This anthology is bursting with voices that are honest, bold, messy, and real. From identity struggles to joy, from being erased to being too loud for some—these stories are beautifully human and super validating. Whether you’re bi yourself or just want to understand better, this one’s a gem.

Why These Books Matter

For so many of us, especially those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer, or questioning, literature was our first real mirror. Before we had community, we had pages. These nonfiction books don’t just document history or personal journeys, they affirm the full spectrum of our gender identities and sexualities. They challenge the binary, celebrate intersectionality, and give voice to those often pushed to the margins. For every young person coming out, every adult rediscovering themselves, and every ally trying to understand, these are must-read works that offer empathy, context, and connection.

Representation Is Resistance

In a world where LGBTQ+ rights are still under attack, especially for trans, nonbinary, and intersex people, visibility is more than just important—it’s revolutionary. Every time we center queer voices, especially queer voices of color, we fight back against erasure. From New York to rural towns across the country, queer readers deserve to see themselves in stories that reflect both their struggles and their joy. Whether you’re reading these books as part of your own self-discovery or sharing them with a best friend, they help dismantle stigma and build a future where all of us, every identity, every experience, can thrive.

Books are powerful. Queer books are essential.
